Our Science outreach program, “Reaction Time,” is a hands-on,
minds-on science outreach program that brings innovative instruction in elementary chemistry to fifth grade students.
Reaction Time includes a 50-minute assembly with the entire fifth grade, followed by a 25-minute, hands-on lab experience with each class (one class at a time).
The program covers Standard 1 of the fifth grade science core — matter, physical changes, and chemical reactions. During the lab, students design and perform experiments under the direction of a science specialist.
Reaction Time was developed by The Children‘s Museum of Utah (now Discovery Gateway) and funded by the Utah State Office of Education to assist elementary educators and to enhance the state‘s science curriculum. In addition to conducting experiments, Discovery Gateway provides teachers with preparatory packets and follow-up materials, and science equipment to promote positive attitudes toward science.
Reaction Time will be offered to every school district in the State of Utah over a three-year period. Based on a pre-set rotation, most schools receive a sponsored (FREE) program about every other year. Schools not on the 2006–2007 list for sponsorship may purchase the program for a fee of $275*.
