Bring More Discovery into Your Kindergarten Classroom

The Potential Energy program (PEP) is a free, 45-minute per class program. It is an inquiry-based session that covers Utah Core Science Standard 3 Objective 1 for the kindergarten curriculum. Students will participate in hands-on experimentation as well as see demonstrations that show concepts such as gravity, forces, and laws of motion. With guidance from the instructor, students will discover and describe these physics basics without being overwhelmed by complex vocabulary or abstract ideas.

PEP was written and developed in partnership with Charles Matthews, STEM coordinator for Park City school district. It was piloted in spring of 2016 through the generosity of Park City school district and their elementary schools. We will focus on schools within a 2-hour driving time from Salt Lake City for the 2017-2018 school year. Eventually we hope to bring it to all elementary schools in Utah every year, much like we are able to do with Reaction Time. We want to invite you to schedule a date for us to bring this program to your school starting in May 2017. All we need from you is a room, some tables, and chairs.

For more information regarding Potential Energy, you may contact Laura Cotter at lcotter@discoverygateway.org or 801-456-5437 extension 137. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
