Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum Opens New Literacy-Based Exhibit

Discovery Gateway Children's Museum is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibit celebrating literacy and the love of reading. The Reading Nookwill open on Thursday, March 2 with free admission sponsored by SLCo ZAP program. March 2 coincides with Dr. Seuss's birthday which is recognized by the National Education Association as "Read Across America Day" -- an ideal day to launch the new literacy-based exhibit.

The Reading Nook features several iconic pieces from the museum's original location on Beck Street in Salt Lake City, including the jumbo light switch, giant chair, and pencil ladder from the Sizewise gallery. These treasured pieces from the museum's collection have been re-imagined to create the perfect reading space.
The Reading Nook will also be home to the new Take a Book, Leave a Book library, in partnership with Salt Lake City Public Library and KUED PBS Kids. Families are encouraged to bring in a book from home for another family to enjoy in exchange for a different book to take home. "Through this program, it is our mission to put a book in the hands of every child and cultivate a lifelong love of reading," explains Discovery Gateway Executive Director Laurie Hopkins.

The Reading Nook also features information about Salt Lake County's participation in the national Talking is Teaching initiative dedicated to closing the word gap and supporting families of young children to learn together in any language - through talking, singing, reading, writing and playing every day. Discovery Gateway is a proud contributing partner in this initiative and provides an ideal environment for families to engage in these activities.

Join Discovery Gateway on March 2 from 11 am - 5 pm to enjoy readings of Dr. Seuss books in the Reading Nook, a full schedule of Dr. Seuss themed activities throughout the museum, and special appearances of The Cat in the Hat!
