Discovery Gateway Supports Juneteenth Celebrations by Hosting Black History Programming
June 07, 2021— Salt Lake City, Utah— Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum (DGCM) is adding to the celebrations and education of Juneteenth by hosting an educational day at the museum on June 18th as to leave space for the community events celebrating the day of June 19th.
Juneteenth commemorates Freedom Day on June 19, 1865, announcing the total emancipation of those held as slaves in the United States. This was almost two and a half years following the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln. Also called Jubilee Day, African Americans call this day Juneteenth.
To celebrate and educate others on this important date in Black History, DGCM will be hosting educational programming which will include sensory quilting, historical storytelling, stamp portraits, musical performances from local artists, and family history information.“This is a great opportunity to introduce young children to the meaning of Juneteenth through an interesting mix of educational and hands-on activities. Taking time to do things like this with your children, ignites their natural curiosity and opens their minds to new understandings.” said Executive Director and CEO of DGCM Kathleen Bodenlos.
Programming starts from 1:00PM-5:00PM June 18th at the Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum.
