Secret Garden Day

Secret Garden Day
Fun for Everyone

Happy Birthday Francis Hodgeson Burnett! While she wrote many famous children’s books, her most well-known was probably The Secret Garden. Published in 1909, Burnett was inspired to write The Secret Garden after a vacation to the English countryside. Her vacation house was surrounded by a rose garden, and the time spent in nature helped the author feel relaxed and hopeful. These sentiments are reflected in The Secret Garden, which is probably why it is such a well-loved children’s book.

While it is too late in the season to escape to a rose garden, we can be like the main character Mary Lennox and connect with the outdoors.  Thanks to some help from Red Butte Garden https://www.redbuttegarden.org/ we can head outside and find some clues about what happens to our gardens in the winter. Check out their guide here!

We can also make this fabulous leaf crown as a way to enjoy the fallen leaves that surround us. Children love to collect treasures from the outdoors, and this is a perfect way to display their discoveries. While these crowns are a great way to display leaves, they are also perfect for pine needles, grasses and any flowers that withstand the cold.

The longer nights of winter are also the perfect time to curl up with a great book. We especially love this version of The Secret Garden, with added illustrations and activities. Another great way to experience the secret garden is this audiobook. Finally the new The Secret Garden movie is another great option for families to experience Burnett’s masterpiece together.
