Make a Gift: Jewlery Making!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christamas at Discovery Gateway! With Christmas is just around the corner, we are making fun and easy gifts that your children can make for their friends and family! All month, during our Sunday and Monday Classes, we will be making jewlery, bags, bowls, and holiday cards! Let your child express their creativity while creating memories! This Sunday we will be making Jewery braclets that can be given to mothers, or friends!

Materials Needed:

  • Beads
  • Old Wrapping Paper Designs
  • Fishing Line
  • Modge Podge
  • Pencil

Create the bracelet by stringing beads and the wrapping paper beads onto some fishing line! You can make it as big or small as you want! Try making different designs for braclets and neckaces! To make the wrapping paper beads; follow the instructions below!

Take your wrapping paper and cut it into strips that are between 0.5 cm long and 2 cm long. The wider the strip, the wider the bead. Strips should be at least 30 cm long, although longer strips will create a thicker bead. Wrap the wrapping paper around the end of the pencil. Continue twirling the wrapping paper over in layers. Stop when you have have half the strip twirled onto the pencil. Slowly push the twirled circle of layered wrapping paper off the pencil, keeping its shape. Apply glue or modge podge on the part that hasn’t been twirled yet. Make sure the end is tightly glued on. For added durability and shine, cover the entire bead in Modge Podge and let dry for 4 hours. To make an even cooler shape, try cutting the strips into a triangle. Start by twirling the base of the triangle on the pencil. As the strip gets thinner, layers will show on the bead.

Make this fun activity at home with your children, or stop by Discovery Gateway this Sunday where we will be making these bracelets from 1 – 3pm!
