Ice Cream in a Bag
Ages 3 and up

Happy Pioneer Day! Let’s celebrate by making this tasty dessert and do a fun science experiment. What is the science behind making ice cream in a bag? By adding salt to ice we lower the point at which the ice will melt (this is called the freezing point). This means that we can actually create ice, cold enough to turn the cream into ice cream. This is what is happening when you place the bag of cream and sugar into the bag of ice and salt and then shake like crazy! This activity is so fun and simple kids of all ages will love to take a turn shaking it up!

Materials (makes 1 large serving or 2 small servings):

1 small, seal-able plastic bag
1 large seal-able plastic bag
1 cup half and half
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
½ teaspoon of vanilla extract
3 cups ice
1/3 cup kosher salt

Directions:

  1. Place the half and half, sugar and vanilla in the small bag
  2. Seal the bag, making sure the air has been released
  3. Place ice and salt in the bigger bag.
  4. Place the smaller bag in the bigger bag and seal
  5. Shake the bag for 10 minutes. Tip-put on some fun music and have a dance party!
  6. Open the larger bag and remove the smaller bag
  7. Open the smaller bag and rinse it off to remove the excess salt water that will be on the bag. Then empty the ingredients into a bowl enjoy your tasty treat!
  8. If the ice cream isn’t quite frozen enough you can add more salt to the ice and keep shaking or put your mixture in the freezer for a bit
  9. Get creative and add in some fruit or use other toppings

Helado en una bolsa
De 3 años en adelante

¡Feliz día del pionero! Celebremos haciendo este sabroso postre que también es un delicioso experimento científico. Al agregar sal al hielo, bajamos el punto en el que l hielo se derretirá (esto se llama punto de congelación). Esto significa que podemos crear hielo lo suficiente como para convertir la leche en helado.

Materiales:

1bolsa de plástico pequeña con cierre
1 bolsa grande de plástico con cierre
1 taza de crema mitad y mitad
2 cucharadas de azúcar granulada
½ cucharadita de extracto de vainilla
3 tazas de hielo
1/3 taza de sal kosher

Direcciones:

  1. Coloque la crema de mitad y mitad, el azúcar y la vainilla en la bolsa pequeña
  2. Selle la bolsa, asegurándose de que se haya sacado todo el aire.
  3. Coloque hielo y sal en la bolsa más grande
  4. Coloque la bolsa más pequeña en la bolsa más grande y selle
  5. Agite la bolsa por 10 minutos. ¡ponga música divertida y tenga una fiesta de baile y pase la bolsa para que todos tengan un turno!
  6. Abra la bolsa mas grande y retire la bolsa más pequeña.
  7. ¡Abre la bolsa más pequeña y disfruta de tu sabroso manjar!
  8. Sea creativa y agregue algo de fruta u otros ingredientes.
