Join us for “Rainbow Turkey” at the STEAM Lab in Discovery Gateway! Kids will explore the science of chromatography and capillary action as they create colorful turkeys for Thanksgiving. They’ll start by drawing on coffee filters with washable markers, then watch the colors spread as we add water—diluting the dye and allowing it to travel up the coffee filter. This fun, hands-on activity brings art and science together as kids turn their coffee filters into vibrant turkey feathers!

Discovery Gateway’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) lab offers a wide variety of real-world, inquiry-based, participant-focused, and engaging experiences. Programs may vary from short 10-15 minute introductory activities to more in-depth family learning experiences that can last 30 to 60 minutes. The STEM approach is an especially impactful way to introduce young children to the more traditionally rigorous STEM fields. Local artists, scientists, and other community partners such as the Bureau of Land Management, U of U Science Department, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and the Utah Division of Arts and Museums are a few of the community partners who have collaborated with the museum. We strongly believe that through interaction with STEAM exhibits and programs, participants can experience wonder, inquiry, experimentation, problem-solving, and most importantly, learning through play.
The STEAM Lab is proudly sponsored by Collins Aerospace and the Williams Foundation.
