Rosh Hashanah Yarn Apples
Fun for the whole family

Rosh Hashanah is a Jewish Holiday that literally means “head of the year.” It is always the 1st day of the 7th month in the Jewish Calendar, which means it falls sometime in September or October.

It marks the beginning of a 10 day period of contemplation, known as the
“10 days of Awe”, and is a time for families to reflect on the past year, make amends and do good deeds. These 10 days end with another Jewish Holiday, Yom Kippur.

For many families, Rosh Hashanah includes a special meal. This meal has many parts and some are symbolic. For example. eating apples and honey represents healing and hope that the next year will be sweet. During this meal, people may use their best table linen and wear fancy new clothes.

For our Rosh Hashanah celebration, we are making these fun yarn apples! They will look great at your house and are fun, but easy enough that everyone in your family can do them together. Winding the yarn around the cardboard can be a great time for everyone to discuss their hopes for the new year.

From everyone at the museum, we wish you “Shanah Tovah”(the Hebrew greeting for this holiday that means “Have a good year”)

Materials:

  • Yarn(about 1 skein) in red, green or yellow
  • Green or brown pipe cleaner
  • Green ribbon or piece of scrap fabric
  • 2 in x 5 in piece of cardboard

Directions:

  1. Bend your piece of cardboard in half, then flatten it. This will make it easier to manage
  2. Take your cardboard and wrap your yarn around it. The more times you wrap it around, the fuller your apple will be
  3. Stop wrapping when you decide the wrapped yarn is full enough. Cut the wrapped yarn off from the skein, and put the end to the side
  4. Cut the pipe cleaner in half. Set 1 half aside, use the other half for steps 5 and 6
  5. Put half your pipe cleaner underneath the yarn so it is in the slight crease in your cardboard
  6. Pull the ends of the pipe cleaner around the yarn, and twist them together
  7. Pull the yarn off the apple
  8. Take the other piece of pipe cleaner and twist it around the bottom of the yarn. Cut off any leftover pieces.
  9. Arrange the yarn so it looks like a circle by pulling it out
  10. Tie the green ribbon around the top of the pipe cleaner, making leaves
